Biological Terrain Assessment
Advanced Urine and Saliva Testing

Biological Terrain Assessment uses urine and saliva to identify ph, oxidative stress, oxidation-reduction potential or redox and resistivity?

Potential Hydrogen or pH is and indicator or hydrogen ions. The more ions the lower the pH will be. The lower number of hydrogen ions the higher or more alkaline the pH will be.

Oxidative stress, oxidation-reduction potential or redox is the measurement of cellular energy production for the purpose to provide cellular energy from the mitochondria and also for this energy to burn up or oxides invading micro-organisms.

Resistivity is the concentration or dilution or minerals and their ability to function correctly.

Human body fluid distribution
1) Approximately 60% of the entire adult human body is fluid
2) Most of this fluid is found within the cells and is referred to as intracellular fluid.
3) Approximately one third of this fluid, however, is found in the space outside of the cells and is known as extra cellular fluid. Extra cellular fluid comprises intra-ocular fluid, cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid. We will focus on interstitial fluid.

What is interstitial fluid?
1) Interstitial fluid continuously baths every cell in the body
2) Interstial fluid is like a rich “nutritious soup” for all of the cells
3) The health and vitality of every cell and hence the entire body is dependent upon the health, vitality and movement of the interstitial fluid.
4) Interstial fluid is circulated continuously around the body through both the movement of the circulatory and the lymphatic system.
5) Interstitial fluid represents the primary fluid found in both the plasma well as the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic System
1) Lymph is derived from interstitial fluid that flows into the lymphatics.
2) The lymphatic system not only aids in the movement of nutrients to the cell, but also the removal of waste products out of the body.
3) Both the salvia and plasma are formed from lymphatic fluid (interstitial fluid)
4) The lymphatic system is also an essential part of the immune and oxidative stress systems.

Why use Saliva?

Saliva Contains 3 primary secretions
1) A serous protein, which contains ptyalin, and alpha amylase
2) A mucin protein, which contains mucous needed for lubrication
3) Interstitial fluid

Saliva is an excellent indicator of:
1) The lymphatic System: The exact same interstitial fluid found in the lymphatic system is found in the saliva.
2) The Digestive System: Not only because of the enzymes of alpha-amylase and lipase, but also because two-thirds of the lymphatics of the body are formed by the liver and small intestine.
3) The Pancreas: The primary secreting cells inside the common pancreatic secretory duct that release alpha-amylase are identical to the ones in the mouth. They are identical in structure, function and neurological regulation.
4) Hydration: The amount and ease of the client to produce a quality of saliva is directly related to their hydration levels. Those individuals who cannot rapidly and adequately develop a few cc’s of saliva are dehydrated.
5) Lubrication: Our digestion and assimilation process as well as a small amount of anti-oxidant capability (nitrites to nitrates into nitric oxide) factors are dependent upon mucin.
6) Electrolytes: Its composition includes sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate and bicarbonate ions.  The relative concentration of electrolytes is also identical between the fluids of the saliva and the blood plasma.

Why use urine?

1) Urine is formed as a product of kidney function. Each kidney is composed of over 2,000,000 nephrons that serve as filters to clean the blood plasma.
2) Waste from the blood and indirectly from the lymphatic system is drained out of the body through the urine.
3) Whatever the body has accumulated in excess will be removed from the body via the kidney and will appear in the urine.

Primary function of the kidney include.
1) Maintenance of extra cellular fluid ( matrix) volume and osmolality
2) Balancing the intake and excretion of sodium (Na+) and water.
3) Establishing a balance of extra cellular (matrix) potassium levels (K+)
4) Creating an ideal ph for the extra cellular (matrix) by adjusting the excretion of hydrogen (H+) and bicarbonate ion (HCO3)
5) Conservation of essential nutrients like glucose and amino acids
6) Removal of the waste end products of metabolism, including urea, uric acid and certain zenobiotics.
7) Metabolic activities including arginine formation, gluconeogenesis and peptide hydrolysis
8) Source of hormones, angiotensin II, erthropoitin, D-hormone and prostaglandins

PH Values of the body

Tissue or Fluid ph

Saliva                         6.00 - 7.00
Gastric Secretions        1.00 – 3.50
Pancreatic Secretions   8.00 – 8.30
Bile                                      7.80
Small Intestine            7.50 – 8.00
Urine                          4.50 – 8.00
Feces                         4.60 – 8.40

Based on buffers  the optimal values are:

Urine    6.30  to  6.50
Saliva   6.50  to  6.80

Causes for acid conditions

A primary cause for acid excess (low ph) is through incomplete digestion.  Other causes are due to excess amounts, refined foods, and lack of and/or imbalance of minerals, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium [not table salt (sodium chloride)], insufficient beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract, inadequate insulin levels.

Undigested  Carbohydrates = Lactic acids
       “ Fats = Keto-acids
Proteins = Nitric acids
(dependent upon = Sulphuric acid
the form of amino  Phosphoric acid
acid)

Other acids are naturally produced through cellular metabolism. Intake and tissue reserves of minerals will compensate for this.

PH

PREPARATION FOR YOUR BTA TEST
12-HOUR FASTING GUILDELINES

Eliminate all vitamin and mineral supplements except fiber such as psyllium hull or seeds if absolutely necessary  48 hours before your test.  Continue with any medications that you normally take.

Avoid scheduling your test within 24 hours of airplane travel.

Women:  Also avoid scheduling your test during and the first week following your menstrual period. Avoid having sex for two nights before the test unless you use a condom. Unprotected sex can cause false elevated readings in your urine values.

Fast for 12 hours prior to your BTATM test.  Complete your dinner the evening prior to the test no later than 6:00-7:00 PM.  After dinner, brush your teeth and refrain from eating or drinking anything until after your test.  This includes chewing gum, throat lozenges and candy.

Take any prescribed medications as directed with only a small amount of water.

Refrain from using any toothpaste, mouthwashes or mouth rinses both at bedtime and the morning of your test.  Also avoid the use of any lipstick or makeup around your mouth and lips.  Such substances can change the chemistry of the mouth and your saliva.

If you wear dentures or orthodontic appliances, refrain from wearing these during the 12-hour fasting period until after your saliva specimen has been obtained.  Denture adhesives, plastics and metals can change the chemistry of the saliva.

On the morning of your test, obtain a sample of your first-morning urine.  Try to obtain a mid-stream specimen (urinate a small amount first, then obtain the remaining urine in your specimen cup).  If you did not receive your specimen container, thoroughly wash a glass jar & lid with hot water.  Avoid the use of harsh soap or bleach as these can create residues that can alter your urine results.  Urine can be collected at 4:00 AM or later.

When you arrive for your test, bring your urine container.  A small, saliva specimen cup will be provided.  Expectorate approximately 2 teaspoons of saliva into the cup.  Be certain not to bring up post-nasal drip.  Or if you wish, you can begin to produce saliva 10-15 minutes before you arrive at the test.  Saliva cannot be more than 30-40 minutes old to give an accurate reading.

Feel free to bring your toothbrush, toothpaste, dentures and lipstick to the office for use after your test.  If you are hungry, be sure to bring a piece of fruit, some juice and/or a muffin to eat after you have obtained and provided your saliva and urine specimens.  You may also want to bring purified water to drink.

BTATM test results will be discussed with you either on the day of testing or during a scheduled phone consultation.
